Diamond Rings

In today’s world, the diamond ring is one of the most popular ring types for a woman. It symbolizes wealth, quality and status; a woman with a diamond ring couldn’t wish for a better piece of jewelry. Diamond rings are often given to women by their partners as a symbol of love and devotion, typically either when they are engaged or married. Diamonds are known to be the finest of gems and it’s worth investigating the history of diamond rings in order to discover more about the origins of this high-status jewelry.

From a scientific viewpoint, diamonds come about as the result of intense pressure, combined with extreme heat. The only place that satisfies these two conditions is deep within the earth’s crust, at a depth of over one hundred miles. So how do we manage to get hold of the diamonds that are used in diamond rings? Many millions of years ago, volcanic activity brought diamonds to the surface of the earth, where they can now be found and mined by mankind. The diamond is widely known for being the hardest substance found on earth, able to scratch any other gemstone without being scratched itself.

There are many places in the world where diamonds can still be discovered to facilitate the production of diamond rings. Australia and the African continent are the two main sources of diamonds in the modern world, but they can also be found in Russia, China and Brazil amongst other smaller countries.

The types of diamonds found in diamond rings are not naturally shaped but have to be carefully cut or chiselled for their true beauty to be revealed. Some popular styles of diamond cut, typically found in diamond rings, are the round, brilliant cut; the emerald cut; the pear-shaped brilliant cut and the marquise-shaped brilliant cut. The most popular type of diamond ring in today’s world is the simple-yet-elegant solitaire diamond ring, in which the diamond is encased within six prongs in a ring typically made of white gold or platinum.
