Diamond Earrings

Diamond earrings are one of the most important pieces that a woman has in her jewelry collection and in the twenty-first century it has become more acceptable for men to wear them as well. Each diamond is unique; therefore it is not easy to select two matching diamonds to create a pair of earrings. When selecting a pair of diamond earrings there are several factors to consider. First look at the size, color and clarity of the diamond. Next, look at the shape and cut of the diamond. The type of setting is also important, as well as the type of metal in which the stone will be set. Do not forget to evaluate the post of the earrings and the quality of the craftsmanship.

Evaluating the size, color and clarity alone can take quite a while because there are so many to choose from and you want to come up with the combination that is right for you. The size of a diamond earring is measured in carats. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. Diamond earrings come in an assortment of sizes from .01 diamond weight all the way to 6.00 diamond weights. Experts state that a G-H color stone will become colorless when mounting. Therefore, it is ok if you can not afford to purchase a D-F color because you will not be able to tell the difference. There are also many different colors to choose from when picking out earrings. Some of these include white, ruby, pink, sapphire, lavender, canary, royal topaz and emerald green to name a few. In addition, compare the clarity or flaws when selecting your jewelry. Make sure that your stones only contain a minimal amount of flaws, for a diamond without any flaws is very rare and very expensive. Flaws may be internal imperfections such as small cracks and spots or external flaws such as nicks and scratches. These flaws may be treated by drilling a laser beam inside the stone or filling cracks with a glass like substance only visible under a microscope. However, laser drilling may leave lines and cracks that can be detected under a microscope and treating a flaw by filling fractures can lead to erosion of the filler, darkening of the color or create a cloudy look.
