Flaws may be internal imperfections such as small cracks and spots or external flaws such as nicks and scratches. These flaws may be treated by drilling a laser beam inside the stone or filling cracks with a glass like substance only visible under a microscope. However, laser drilling may leave lines and cracks that can be detected under a microscope and treating a flaw by filling fractures can lead to erosion of the filler, darkening of the color or create a cloudy look.
