Diamond Earrings

There are also a variety of shapes and cuts to peruse when making your selection. Some of these include round, heart, oval, princess, pear, emerald cut, trillion, triangle and square. Some may think that the cut of the diamond refers to the shape, but it actually refers to the depth and width, along with the facets of the diamond. These factors have a direct effect on the brilliance of stone. A diamond with an ideal cut will display scintillionation, which is the flash of light given off when moved in the light. Problems occur with the cut when there is a broken or chipped cutlet, the cutlet is off center or completely missing, the facet is not properly aligned, the girdle is too thick or too thin, the girdle has tiny cracks inside the stone or a table slopes to one side. You can tell if a diamond has good or poor quality by looking into its center. A stone that does not have dark color in the center or one that looks opaque has a poor quality cut. The cut of a diamond is more important than the weight or color because it’s what makes your earrings sparkle and look beautiful.

In addition, the shape of the stone may be mounted in different settings. The types of settings are three prong, four prong and crown. A diamond earring should fit flat against your ear. A setting will make the difference between a good and bad fit. The three prong setting is the best fit. It pulls the center of gravity toward your earlobe; which gives a more elegant look. The four prong setting is a good fit and provides a lower setting than most others. The crown setting is the worst fit because it pushes the stone too far forward and your earring droops when you wear it. A diamond should also be selected based upon the type of metal it will be mounted in. Some traditional metals are platinum, yellow and white gold. In addition, diamond earrings for pierced ears will have a clip or wire to keep the jewelry in place. This is known as the post, which can be friction or threaded. Make sure that your diamond earrings are secure on your ear by selecting the threaded backs. They make it almost impossible for your earrings to come off. However, this also makes them more difficult to put on and remove and should be worn with large and expensive earrings. Friction backs are easier to handle and although not as secure as threaded post, they have two notches, making it unlikely that they will accidentally come off your ear.
